Chocolate - it contains theobromine which comes from the same family as caffeine. Some dogs are highly sensitive to it. If your dog manages to steal a small piece of chocolate it will most likely not have an adverse effect but in large amounts it can be toxic. Symptoms of toxic reaction include increased heart rate, hyper-excitability, vomiting and diarrhea - in which case call your vet.

Grapes and Raisins - the APCC found that dogs who consumed these in "small or large" amounts developed
kidney failure. Symptoms are abdominal pain, diarrhea, lethargic and lack of appetite. If you suspect your pet has ingested a grape/grapes, treatment is needed immediately.

Dog Eye Problems - Infection and Proper Eye Care

One of the more common problems plaguing dogs is getting an eye infection. Your dog's eyes are delicate organs and adequate attention should be paid to cleaning and caring for his eyes. Although lids, lashes and tears are natural forms of protection, they are sometimes not adequate against the dust and dirt that can get into your dog's eyes.
Dogs can be susceptible to conjunctivitis, a bacterial infection which affects the thin membrane covering the front of the eye called the conjunctiva. It causes redness and dryness in the eye or eyes. When your dog's eye is inflamed, it will tend to result in a thick exudate which clogs up the front of the eye and makes it difficult for your dog to open his eye. Treatment is very quick and effective and is usually cleared up with a short course of ointment which can be prescribed by your vet.
Although some dogs look cuter with longer fur, do bear in mind that if your dog's hair or fur is too long, it could potentially obscure his vision. You're well advised to keep it trimmed so that the ends do not blow into his eyes and cause damage or irritation. You should also be on the look out for dirt or foreign bodies that could have gotten into your dog's eyes so they can be removed as quickly as possible.
There are a number of diseases and conditions which can affect your dog's eyes - the main being cataracts. Cataracts are a condition in which there is a clouding of the lens and over time, the clouding grows more opaque. Over time, this could lead to total blindness in the affected eye. Glaucoma occurs when there is am increase in the pressure within the eye. When there are irritants or foreign bodies lodged in the eye tissues, the constant irritation can lead to corneal ulceration and a change in the surrounding tissues. Slight abnormality in physiology within the tear ducts may lead to epiphora, a chronic leaking in lachrymal fluid and you will observe that your dog is tearing frequently. With old age setting in, blindness is sometimes experienced by dogs because of gradual deterioration of the lens following development of cataracts.
Besides being alert to dirt that could irritate your dog's eyes on a daily basis, a thorough check on your dog's eyes should be incorporated into your routine when you do your weekly checkups on him. This will allow you to pick up any problems with his eyes as soon as possible. Making sure that his eyes are kept clean is the first step to good eye care. Clean the skin around the eyes gently with some threadless cotton wool dipped in warm water to remove mucus, dust and dirt. Swab the cotton wool away from the eye and not towards the eye to ensure you do not sweep dirt into your dog's eyes.

Common Dog Illnesses That Can Be Prevented

In most states/counties, dogs are required to stay up-to-date on Rabies vaccinations; however, there are also other vaccinations that Derek needs to stay healthy. Rabies
Rabies is a viral infection that wild animals - such as raccoons and rats - carry. It causes dogs to become aggressive and to foam at the mouth. Death from respiratory failure is possible for a person or animal infected with rabies. The rabies vaccination helps to prevent Derek from getting rabies, as well as preventing him from spreading it to humans and other animals. Rabies shots are given annually, but three-year shots are available in some areas.
Parvovirus
Parvovirus is a sometimes-deadly intestinal virus that is most common in young dogs. It is harbored on any surface that an infected dog comes into contact with. It is possible to transmit parvovirus to a dog through shoes and other items that come into contact with the virus and then touch something your dog touches. Parvovirus can live a long time even in harsh elements. Kennel cough affects the respiratory system. It causes a hacking cough that won't go away. It can lead to pneumonia in a dog with a weak immune system.
Canine Distemper
Canine distemper is a disease that is almost always fatal. It affects the dog's nervous system, and it attacks the brain within a few weeks. It can also lead to pneumonia. The vaccine, which is given in three-week intervals when the dog is still a puppy and then an annual booster shot, can effectively prevent canine distemper. Sadly, if Derek does contract canine distemper, euthanasia is often necessary to prevent undue suffering.
Coronavirus
Canine coronavirus is a viral infection that affects the gastrointestinal tract. This virus is similar to the parvovirus and produces similar symptoms; however coronavirus is easily treated and often less severe than parvovirus.
Leptospirosis
Leptospirosis affects the organs of the body, including the kidneys. Rats are known to carry leptospirosis bacterium. It is a bacterial disease that is mostly found in dogs that live on a farm because of the prevalence of rats on farms. Leptospirosis isn't found in all vaccinations, so when you take Derek to the vet, be sure to ask if he needs to be vaccinated against this disease.
Parasites and Worms
Having puppies wormed is common because roundworms can be spread from a mother to her puppies. Besides roundworms, dogs can become infected with tapeworms, hookworms, Giardia, coccidia and whipworms. Most worms are transmitted through canine fecal matter; however, because the worms are alive, they may burrow into the soil.
Roundworms and immature hookworms, called sandworms, can be transmitted to humans. When you take Derek to the vet, he will have an intestinal worm check to determine if he needs to be treated for worms and parasites.
Heartworms
Heartworms are internal parasites that can be fatal for Derek. Heartworms live in the arteries leading to the heart. They may also invade the heart, and they may cause severe damage to the circulatory system. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes, but they are easily prevented if you give Derek a monthly heartworm preventative. If Derek does contract heartworms, he will have to go through a difficult treatment regimen that may not be effective.

Coco, a chocolate and white Border Collie puppy, whom I know personally was left at home while the family went out for dinner and a movie. By the time they returned their house was almost unrecognizable. When Coco's family walked into the house they thought they'd been burgled.
The bookcase in the living room was tipped over, there were pages ripped and torn all over the floor. The crystal vase from the top of the bookcase was smashed and a clock face shattered. The stuffing from the cushions on the couch was flung all over the room and it was generally a scene of destruction. But it didn't end there. As they entered the bedroom there was clothing spread all over the floor with shoes scatted here and there. Fashion and auto magazine pages were shredded to pieces and the occasional novel accompanied them.
Amongst all this devastation Coco bounded up to her owners and jumped wildly onto them. Their immediate worry was that someone had broken into the house and stolen their belongings so they picked up Coco and lavished her with praise for being safe and sound after thieves had entered their house. However, once they surveyed the damage in the house their affection for Coco turned to anger and outrage. There were no burglars, there were no thieves, but there were bite marks on the shoes and saliva on the cushions. Coco's sharp little puppy teeth were clearly the cause of destruction on the books. However, to this day, the family still don't know how she managed to overturn the entire bookcase.
Coco's owners were so angry and so upset when they realized what had happened that they could hardly contain their emotions. The problem was, getting angry with Coco after the event solved nothing. A dog doesn't understand you're talking about an event in the past. She didn't understand their words, their threats or the profanities. The chaos was just Coco's way of expressing her boredom and loneliness, she didn't know right from wrong.
